Steps to Perform CPR on an Adult

  1. Check & call- check consciousness - tap shoulder and shout 'Are you OK?'. If there is no response, call 911 and get the AED, if available.

  2. Compressions - If the victim is not breathing normally, coughing or moving, begin chest compressions. Push down on the chest 11/2 to 2 inches in the center of the chest between the nipples. Pump at the rate of 100/minute, faster than once per second.

  3. Repeat - Continue compressions until the person begins to respond (cough/movement/etc) or help arrives. If an AED is available, turn it on, apply the pads as quickly as possible, and follow the prompts.
